| Introduction The Periyar Sanctuary in Idukki district of Kerala extends to 777 Sq.kms. The land is encompassed by the part of high mountain ranges, the Western Ghats, in the North Central part is the Periyar lake - a vast reservoir of water created by a dam on the Periyar river. The dam was built in 1895. In 1978 the Periyar sanctuary was declared as a Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger. A cruise in the lake by motor launch is an incredibily pleasant experience, as herds of elephants, deer, bisons, tigers and leopards are seen at the banks of the lake for a drink. Herds of elephant crossing the lake may be the most fascinating sight. |
